In China, engineers have developed the humanoid robot GEAIR 2.0, designed to fully automate the hybrid pollination process in plant breeding, effectively replacing human labor. This cutting-edge technology was unveiled at the Seed Industry Conference held in Beijing. Equipped with two manipulators, GEAIR 2.0 holds a pollen tube in one hand and a soft brush in the other. During a live demonstration, the robot successfully pollinated a single tomato flower in under 10 seconds.

Significant upgrades have enhanced GEAIR 2.0’s ability to identify the pistil, boosting accuracy from 85% to an impressive 92.8%. Plant biologists have also genetically modified the crops to be male-sterile with externally protruding pistils, simplifying the robot’s task. The robot autonomously navigates through stems and leaves, utilizing optical sensors capable of focusing on microscopic targets without needing to manually unfold petals.
