NameTag: A Facial Recognition Function

A facial recognition feature called NameTag has been discovered in the code of Meta's app, designed for use with its smart glasses. However, the feature is currently inactive and does not transmit any biometric data to Meta's servers. This was confirmed by company spokesperson Ryan Daniels, who stated that

“no product with such a feature has been released to consumers.”

NameTag uses the cameras on smart glasses to store images of faces and can alert the device owner when a recognized person appears. A security researcher who analyzed the code found that earlier versions of the app contained interface elements hinting at this capability. Specifically, a Connections menu encouraged users to save people they encounter.

Return to Facial Recognition Technology

Meta previously abandoned facial recognition on Facebook in 2021, but in 2024, the company reintroduced the technology on Instagram and Facebook to help detect fraudulent advertisements. Despite this, no final decision has been made regarding the rollout of NameTag. As Ryan Daniels emphasized,

“a final decision on its implementation has not yet been made,”
and added that
“Meta does not create a centralized database of faces.”

According to Engadget, Meta explored launching NameTag amid the shifting political landscape in the United States, but as of now, no products featuring this function have been made available to consumers.

The advancement of facial recognition technology continues to spark debate over privacy and ethical concerns. Although Meta has stepped back from certain uses of the technology, its recent reintroduction in Instagram and Facebook shows the company is still exploring potential applications. In this context, NameTag—though not yet implemented—could become part of future Meta products if the appropriate decisions are made.

As Meta continues to navigate the complexities of facial recognition technology, it has also ventured into new domains, such as enhancing user engagement through innovative platforms. For instance, the company's recent launch of an AI-driven forum application aims to compete with established services like Reddit, reflecting Meta's broader strategy to diversify its offerings while addressing user privacy concerns.
