EV Sales Jump 49% in April Despite VAT Reintroduction

В квітні продажі електромобілів зросли на 49%, незважаючи на відновлення ПДВ.

Electric Vehicle Registrations in Ukraine

Approximately 8,500 electric vehicles were registered in Ukraine during the first four months of 2026. Starting January 1, 2026, a 20% value-added tax on imported EVs was reinstated, which may have helped revive demand in this vehicle segment. In April 2026, EV registrations surged 49% compared to March, with 1,859 new and 6,641 used cars hitting the roads.

Top Electric Vehicle Models

Among new EVs entering the market, the BYD Leopard 3 leads with 312 units registered. The BYD Sealion 06 EV follows in second place with 216 units, trailed by:

  • Volkswagen ID. UNYX – 161 units
  • Zeekr 001 – 153 units
  • Zeekr 7X – 92 units

In April 2026, Ukrainians also imported over 19,000 used cars, with EVs accounting for 11.4% of total imports.

Despite the monthly uptick, EV demand in Ukraine dropped 48% compared to April 2025. Among pre-owned vehicles, the most popular models were:

  • Nissan Leaf – 898 units
  • Tesla Model 3 – 811 units
  • Tesla Model Y – 788 units
  • Kia Niro EV – 326 units
  • Chevrolet Bolt – 325 units

The April registration spike points to positive market momentum, yet the sharp year-over-year decline highlights lingering economic or social hurdles. The return of VAT on EV imports could play a key role in stimulating the market, though its success will depend on the broader economic climate and shifting consumer preferences. Strong government support for EV infrastructure development will be crucial to sustain growth and maintain interest among Ukrainian buyers.
