Vaccination Campaigns Against Tuberculosis and Rabies in Ukraine

In February, Ukrainian regions will receive a delivery of more than 274,000 doses of vaccines for free immunization against tuberculosis and rabies. This procurement was carried out by Medical Procurement of Ukraine at the request of the Ministry of Health, ensuring public access to these crucial preventative measures. These efforts are part of ongoing public health initiatives to strengthen disease prevention across the country.

The shipment includes over 189,000 doses of the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis prevention and 85,000 doses of rabies vaccine. The BCG vaccination is provided free of charge and is included in the national immunization schedule, highlighting its recognized importance for children's health. Rabies vaccination, in turn, is part of a broader prevention strategy that begins with the immunization of domestic and farm animals. This procedure is administered by veterinary specialists from the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

The Function of Anti-Rabies Assistance Centers

Within the healthcare system, each region has designated Anti-Rabies Assistance Centers to facilitate a rapid response to incidents involving animal bites or scratches. In the event of such an incident, specialists recommend the following immediate steps:

  • Thoroughly wash the wound with soap and water for 10–15 minutes;
  • Apply a sterile bandage;
  • Seek professional medical help without delay.

These actions are critical for preventing the development of dangerous infections. The initiative by the Ministry of Health and Medical Procurement of Ukraine aims to increase vaccination coverage, which is vital for public health, especially for children. Vaccination against tuberculosis and rabies are key preventative tools that help avert epidemics and protect population health.
