Devastating Traffic Accident in Lviv
Seven-year-old Damir Mykhailo survived a life-threatening head injury sustained in a serious collision on August 27 in Lviv. During the crash, a metal disk from a truck shattered the windshield of the minibus Damir was traveling in with his father and struck him in the head.
Emergency responders immediately controlled heavy bleeding at the scene and performed resuscitation en route to the hospital. A CT scan revealed extensive damage, and Damir was rushed into surgery. The metal fragment had torn away part of his skull, as well as brain tissue and membranes. Doctors feared injury to major blood vessels, including the sagittal sinus.
“The metal piece tore a portion of the skull and damaged brain tissue and membranes. We prepared for the worst because there was a risk to critical vessels like the sagittal sinus, but fortunately the rupture missed it by just a millimeter,” said Taras Mykytin, head of the neurosurgery department.
Surgical Intervention and Recovery
The operation involved decompressive craniectomy, repair of the dura mater, and placement of an external drain to manage blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow. After surgery, Damir was placed in a coma and supported by mechanical ventilation. He emerged from the coma after two weeks and spent nearly a month in intensive care. Rehabilitation efforts began while he was still in critical care.
Damir has now been hospitalized for two months. Although he is conscious, recognizes voices, and responds to family, he remains unable to speak or move. Complications from post-traumatic hydrocephalus necessitated additional surgeries, including the installation of a cerebrospinal fluid shunt system. Physical and speech therapists are actively working with him, and plans are underway to implant a metal plate to reconstruct the skull. Plastic surgeons are consulting with the family on this next step.
Damir’s mother, Olga, shared harrowing details of the crash:
“My husband called, shouting in a voice I didn’t recognize. The line was barely audible, filled with broken words like ‘Damir’ and ‘accident.’ Later I learned that a brake pad hit my son’s head, scraping it so badly that part of his brain was visible on the dashboard. Then a stranger called to say there were no signs of life.”
The boy faces a long and challenging rehabilitation journey to regain his health after this traumatic injury.
This incident highlights the dangers children face on the roads and the critical importance of rapid medical intervention during emergencies. The skill and dedication of the medical team were crucial in saving Damir’s life. His ongoing recovery underscores both the complexity and hope involved in treating severe brain injuries in young patients.
As medical teams continue to demonstrate their expertise in handling severe injuries, another case has emerged involving a 16-year-old from Sumy who received life-saving treatment after a rare neck injury caused by a metal wire. This incident highlights the critical nature of timely medical intervention in traumatic cases, similar to the challenges faced by Damir's medical team.
