Molotov Cocktails Thrown at Mosque in Lviv: Police Launch Criminal Investigation

Масштабний інцидент у Львові: правоохоронці почали розслідування після нападу на мечеть.

Vandalism Attack in Lviv

On April 28, an unidentified individual committed an act of vandalism by hurling two bottles filled with incendiary liquid at a mosque located within the premises of the Pivdennyi shopping center in Lviv. The attack took place at approximately 8:41 PM. The resulting fire was quickly extinguished, and no casualties or injuries have been reported. The Lviv Oblast Police have confirmed the incident and opened a criminal case under the article concerning intentional destruction or damage to another person's property.

Ayder Rustemov, the Grand Mufti of Crimea and head of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, shared his reaction to the attack. He stated that

“we are convinced that this crime could not have been committed by a religious person, regardless of their beliefs. An assault on a holy site—setting fire to a minbar—is an absolutely unacceptable act for any believer.”

Vandalism and Interfaith Harmony

The incident has sparked outrage, particularly as it follows other recent acts of vandalism, including:

  • in January 2025, when a perpetrator damaged a Hanukkah menorah in Lviv;
  • in September 2024, when a missile strike on Kyiv caused damage to the building of the Islamic Cultural Center of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Crimea (the mosque in Nyvky).

Public figures emphasize that such acts of vandalism are provocations that threaten interfaith harmony. The situation surrounding the attack on the mosque near the Pivdennyi shopping center demands attention and action from law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This event in Lviv highlights the risk to interfaith peace in Ukraine, as acts of vandalism can deepen tensions between different religious communities. It is crucial for authorities to respond to this case by implementing measures to ensure the safety of religious sites and their visitors. Society’s reaction to such events can serve as an important step in strengthening interfaith dialogue and reducing risks for communities that may become targets of aggression.

The recent vandalism in Lviv is not an isolated incident, as similar attacks on religious sites have occurred in Ukraine. For instance, in Zhovkva, a statue of the Virgin Mary was defaced with a red substance, marking a worrying trend of hostility towards places of worship. Such acts not only threaten the sanctity of these sites but also highlight the urgent need for community dialogue and law enforcement intervention to foster interfaith understanding.
