In Lviv, a Taxi Passenger Gave Birth to a Boy Mid-Ride as Driver Quickly Rushed Her to Hospital

В салоні таксі у Львові жінка народила хлопчика під час швидкого шляху до лікарні.

A Remarkable Birth Story in Lviv

On October 12 in Lviv, an extraordinary event unfolded when a woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a taxi while en route to the maternity hospital. The taxi driver, Lesya, kept the vehicle moving without stopping to ensure the mother reached medical care as fast as possible. Both mother and newborn are currently in good health.

Taxi Births: A Growing Phenomenon

This incident marks the third known case within the Uklon taxi service where a child was born during a ride. The previous occurrence happened in August, indicating such emergencies, while rare, are not entirely uncommon. Uklon has an emergency response system, including an SOS button in their app, which, if unanswered, prompts operators to alert the police.

Uklon representatives praised driver Lesya’s calm and decisive action: "She didn’t stop the car to save time and quickly delivered the passenger straight to the hospital’s emergency ward."

However, Uklon acknowledges there is no strict, standardized protocol specifically for childbirth in taxis, as each situation varies significantly. In some cases, waiting for an ambulance might be safer, while in others—like this one—rapid transport to a hospital is critical.

Births occurring outside medical facilities are not isolated to this event. For instance, in February 2026, a woman in a village of the Chernihiv region gave birth to twins at home—the first arriving before medical staff arrived, the second with their assistance. Additionally, on December 31, 2023, a woman in the village of Buzke, Mykolaiv region, went into labor, but the ambulance got stuck in mud, and she delivered during efforts to free the vehicle.

This recent birth in Lviv highlights the importance of quick thinking and preparedness among taxi drivers when faced with emergencies. It also illustrates that Uklon’s approach depends on the unique circumstances of each case. These events emphasize the need for ongoing driver training and improved emergency protocols to provide the highest level of safety for passengers during critical moments.

While the story of a mother giving birth in a taxi is remarkable, it underscores the unpredictable nature of emergencies in Lviv. Just recently, a serious incident occurred at Pidzamche Station, where a collision between a diesel train and an electric locomotive left five people injured. Such events highlight the importance of preparedness and rapid response in critical situations.
