Revival of the Swimming Pool in Lviv
After being closed since 1998, the swimming pool at Ivan Pulyuy Lyceum in Lviv has been fully restored and is now operational. More than 700 students from grades 2 through 7 are benefiting from swim lessons, including children with special educational needs. This facility marks the 22nd swimming pool within Lviv’s educational institutions. The renovation process spanned from 2020 to 2026, with a total investment of 28 million hryvnias.
Currently, 699 students attend swimming classes, among them 24 children with special needs. The pool reopened at the end of September. Maryana Hrudlevska highlighted that
“students from second to seventh grade use the pool, including those with disabilities affecting their musculoskeletal system. We ensured the facility is accessible and adapted to support their participation.”
Details of the Pool Renovation
The restoration involved several key upgrades:
- complete repair of the pool basin;
- replacement of all windows and doors;
- upgrading walls and flooring;
- installation of a new ventilation system;
- adding an air dehumidifier;
- solar panels were mounted on the pool building to enhance energy efficiency.
The lyceum also hosts an inclusive resource center that provides support for children with special needs.
In total, Lviv currently operates 22 swimming pools in educational settings, with 20 in schools and 2 in kindergartens. However, 8 pools remain out of service—5 within schools and 3 in kindergartens.
Andriy Zakalyuk, commenting on the city’s efforts, noted:
“Over the past four years, we have opened and renovated four school pools and resumed swimming programs in two kindergartens.”
Additionally, Andriy Dzhychko emphasized the importance of swimming for children: “I believe every child should learn to swim. It not only strengthens the body but also supports overall physical development. Swimming engages all muscle groups—arms, legs—and improves respiratory function, making it highly beneficial for kids.”
The reopening of the pool at Ivan Pulyuy Lyceum represents a significant advancement in promoting physical education and inclusive learning in Lviv.
This renovation is part of a broader municipal initiative aimed at upgrading education infrastructure and ensuring access to sports activities for all children, including those with special needs. It reflects Lviv’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment that supports every student’s growth. Given that several pools remain closed, continued investment will be essential to expanding opportunities for youth physical education across the city.
As Lviv continues to enhance its educational and healthcare facilities, the upcoming launch of a modern rehabilitation center at the University Hospital highlights the city's commitment to providing comprehensive support for all students, including those with special needs. This initiative complements the recent reopening of the Ivan Pulyuy Lyceum's pool, showcasing Lviv's dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for its youth.
