5G has officially launched in Lviv for the first time in Ukraine — a fifth-generation mobile communication technology. It provides significantly higher internet speeds and opens up new possibilities for mobile communication. As reported by Lviv.media.
5G in Lviv: What is Already Working
According to Stanislav Prybityk, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, 20 5G base stations have already been installed and put into operation in the city. The project is a pilot and is planned to be scaled to other populated areas of Ukraine in the future.
It is currently known that the following cities may be next:
-
Borodyanka in Kyiv Oblast
-
Kharkiv.
«Even during the full-scale invasion, the development of new technologies does not stop. The military is also actively involved in this process,» Prybityk noted.
How the New 5G Connection Differs from 4G
The Ministry of Digital Transformation explains that the fifth generation of mobile communication is fundamentally different from 4G. 5G operates in a different frequency range, allowing for significantly higher data transfer speeds and a more stable connection.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted the xPON technology, which allows for remaining connected even during power outages. This is particularly important for home internet and Wi-Fi, enabling residents to receive news, information about air alerts, and maintain communication with loved ones.
Earlier, the Lviv Regional State Administration discussed key steps with the Ministry of Digital Transformation to improve communication quality in the region. Last November, it was reported that Lviv would become the first city in Ukraine to implement 5G, and if successful, the technology is also planned to be launched in Kyiv and Odesa.
Previously, we wrote about how to install xPON and stay connected.
