Tuareg Rebels Surround Russian Forces in Mali, Capturing Dozens of Soldiers

Туареги оточили війська Росії в Малі, взявши в полон сотні військових.

Ambush on a Military Convoy in Mali

In northern Mali, an attack targeted a military convoy transporting Malian troops and fighters from the Russian paramilitary group known as the African Corps. According to information reported by Ukrainska Pravda, citing Reuters, the convoy consisted of over 200 Russian fighters and more than 100 Malian soldiers. The assault, carried out by Tuareg rebels, occurred in the strategic Anefis region, where they encircled the Russian forces and took dozens of Malian military personnel prisoner.

This incident is not an isolated event. Earlier in the week, a similar attack struck another military convoy moving northward. The rebels belong to the Azawad Liberation Front, while jihadists from the group Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, which is linked to al-Qaeda, are also actively operating in Mali’s northern, central, and southern regions.

Loss of Control and Consequences

A joint operation in April by the Azawad Liberation Front and jihadists led to the junta losing control of Kidal and cost the life of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, who was the key architect of Mali’s cooperation with Russia. In response to the situation, Russia’s African Corps announced the withdrawal of its units, stating it was a joint decision with Malian authorities. The Russian military pullout occurred from the towns of Kidal, Tessalit, and Aguelhok.

This attack underscores the growing instability in the region, where rebels continue to actively confront Russian-backed military forces. The loss of control over key territories and the escalation of conflict threaten not only Mali’s security but also that of neighboring countries. The withdrawal of Russian troops could further complicate the situation, as it deprives local forces of the support needed to combat rebels and jihadists.
