Moscow to Cut Off Mobile Internet and SMS Entirely on May 9

Москва повністю відключить мобільний інтернет та SMS з 9 травня.

Communication Restrictions in Moscow During the May 9 Celebrations

Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development has officially confirmed sweeping communication restrictions in Moscow for the May 9 holiday. As part of these measures, access to certain services will be temporarily limited, including mobile internet and SMS messaging. This comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities to tighten control over information flows during major public events.

Mobile internet in Moscow will be completely shut down, which also blocks access to the so-called “white list” of government and socially important websites. The ability to send and receive SMS messages will also be banned, potentially disrupting daily communication for residents. Notably, no such restrictions are planned for May 7 and 8, meaning users will have normal access to communication services on those days.

Impact on Everyday Life

These restrictions could paralyze services that rely on SMS verification or internet access, such as taxi apps, food delivery platforms, and online banking. In April, Vladimir Putin publicly commented for the first time on widespread internet blackouts in Russian regions, stating that such measures are justified for security reasons.

“In Moscow, it’s now hard to get news due to constant internet outages; residents still feel they are losing something every day.” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Given this, the communication restrictions in Moscow during the May 9 celebrations have sparked significant concern among citizens, as they could severely impact everyday life and communication. The implementation of such measures highlights a growing focus on controlling information flows within the country—likely aimed at maintaining stability during mass events, but also raising concerns about limiting freedom of expression and access to information.

This underscores the importance of developing alternative communication channels in today’s world.

As the situation intensifies, the recent announcement of a ceasefire on May 8-9 adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing events. This temporary halt in hostilities, while aimed at reducing tensions, raises questions about security and the potential for escalated actions in the region.
