Tragedy in Nigeria: 60 people killed as a boat capsizes
A tragedy occurred in Nigeria - as a result of an overloaded boat accident, 60 people lost their lives. This is reported by 'Glavkom' citing Reuters.
It is noted that the boat, with 100 passengers on board, capsized after colliding with a submerged tree stump near the village of Hausawa in the Borgu area.
The head of the local Borgu authority, Abdu'lahi Baba Ara, confirmed that the total number of victims may rise. 'Ten people managed to survive, but their condition is serious. Many are still being searched for by rescuers,' he stated.
Experts note that such accidents at sea in Nigeria have become common, especially during the rainy season when overloaded boats cannot withstand the weight due to safety violations and poor infrastructure.
It is recalled that recently in Nigeria, 18 people died when a passenger canoe capsized in Bauchi state, including 3 men and 15 women. Moreover, another horrific tragedy occurred in Nigeria, where at least 20 people died as a result of an explosion of a wooden vessel on a river in Bayelsa.
Events in Nigeria once again highlight the shortcomings in water safety and the need to improve infrastructure to prevent such tragedies.
