Ukrainian Craft Beer Tasting at the UN

An informal gathering of permanent representatives to the United Nations in New York featured a tasting of Ukrainian craft beer. The event showcased brews from Lviv-based company 'Pravda', including the 'Syla' (Strength) variety, which drew attention for its label depicting a crumbling red silhouette of the Kremlin with the Ukrainian flag flying above it. Ukrainian diplomats at the UN orchestrated what they called 'beer diplomacy,' presenting a selection of craft beers to highlight their culture.

Russian Representative's Reaction

Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's UN envoy, attended the event—an unusual move since he typically skips such social engagements. However, according to Svitlana Melnyk, he was

“simply stunned”
upon seeing the full array of Ukrainian craft beer, particularly the label featuring the disintegrating Kremlin. This likely dampened his mood, as he
“lingered for just a few minutes, then disappeared like a cork”
from the gathering.

This incident adds to a history of cultural diplomacy, where Ukraine seeks to assert its identity on the global stage. Earlier, Nebenzya had conspicuously ignored and distracted himself with his phone during a speech by Ukraine's UN representative Andriy Melnyk at a Security Council meeting.

The Ukrainian craft beer tasting at the UN underscores the role of soft power for Ukraine amid current geopolitical tensions. Choosing a beer with a provocative label reflects Ukraine's effort to emphasize its cultural identity and raise issues of territorial integrity internationally. This strategy aims to shape a positive image of Ukraine and draw global attention to its challenges.

As Ukraine continues to assert its cultural identity on the global stage, recent events like the Ukrainian craft beer tasting at the UN illustrate the innovative approaches being employed. In a similar vein, Ukraine is taking steps to exclude Russia from international cultural platforms, as seen in the move to bar its participation in the Venice Biennale. This ongoing cultural diplomacy highlights the importance of soft power in shaping global perceptions and addressing territorial issues.
