Serious Incident at Johannismühle Wildlife Park

On October 30th at 10:31 AM, a distressing event occurred at Johannismühle Wildlife Park, located just south of Berlin. An eight-year-old girl suffered severe injuries after being bitten by an Arctic wolf. The attack happened while children, accompanied by a park employee, entered the wolf enclosure during feeding or watering time.

Following the attack, the girl was urgently airlifted to Berlin's Charité hospital, reportedly sustaining significant head injuries. In response, Johannismühle Wildlife Park has temporarily closed its gates to visitors, with plans to reopen on November 2nd.

Safety Measures and Regulations at the Park

Visitors are strictly prohibited from entering enclosures housing dangerous animals, as emphasized by Björn Christian Paterok, the park's spokesperson:

"While there are areas like the petting zoo open to the public, enclosures containing dangerous species such as wolves are off-limits to visitors."

Johannismühle Wildlife Park is renowned for its diverse collection of animals, including:

  • Gray and Arctic wolves
  • Brown bears
  • Lynxes

The park has experienced past safety breaches, such as the escape of two lions in 2016 and a wild wolf entering the park grounds to attack a local fallow deer in 2017.

This recent wolf attack is not an isolated event globally. In late 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Uzbekistan where a zoo keeper in the Parkent district opened a lion enclosure for filming and was fatally attacked by the three lions. Such events highlight the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols when handling dangerous wildlife.

The episode at Johannismühle underscores the ongoing challenges of ensuring human safety around wild animals in zoos and wildlife parks. Despite established rules, violations can lead to devastating consequences. This case, along with similar international incidents, stresses the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.
