Fatal explosion at Gunvor Energy terminal in Rotterdam
A storage tank exploded at a Rotterdam port facility operated by international energy group Gunvor Energy, killing one person. Several others were injured, though their exact number has not yet been released. The blast took place around 11:30 in the Europoort harbor area. A maintenance crew had been working on multiple pipelines at the site at the time, and visible blast damage was found on the tank.
Rotterdam police spokespeople said there is no indication of sabotage. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the incident, while emergency crews remain on location. A Gunvor representative commented:
“During the disconnection of these pipelines, something may not have gone as planned.”
Power outage and further incidents
Earlier the same morning, a large electricity failure affected the nearby Botlek port zone. Port authorities stressed that the blackout and the explosion were not connected. The power loss temporarily halted operations at the ExxonMobil oil refinery. In the Maasvlakte industrial area, a fire broke out at a high-voltage substation, likely due to a voltage surge.
Although the events have raised concern in Rotterdam, the precise cause of the explosion remains unknown.
This blast highlights the critical importance of safety at industrial energy sites, where accidents can have severe consequences for workers and the environment. Since maintenance work was underway when the explosion occurred, questions may arise about whether safety procedures were fully followed.
