Нові законодавчі ініціативи мають на меті підтримку і розвиток української мови в усіх сферах життя.

Draft Law on Strengthening the Role of the Ukrainian Language

A draft law 'on strengthening the role of the Ukrainian language in establishing the Ukrainian state' has appeared in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. This document aims to strengthen the position of the Ukrainian language in various spheres of public life and ensure its functioning as the state language.

The authorized representative for the protection of the state language, Olena Ivanovska, has approached the Cabinet of Ministers with an initiative to increase administrative fines for violations of the law 'On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.' This, according to her, will help strengthen the legal basis for the protection of the Ukrainian language.

Main Changes in the Draft Law

The draft law proposes a number of important changes, in particular:

  • updating and approving the spelling of the Ukrainian language taking into account modern scientific approaches;
  • improving the linguistic quality of texts of laws and other regulatory legal acts;
  • enhancing standards of legislative activity, in particular concerning the design of acts of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Moreover, the draft law emphasizes the development of Ukrainian-language audiovisual content by public media and strengthening measures to counter the spread of destructive pro-Russian narratives in the media space of Ukraine. Within the framework of this document, it is also planned to ensure the filling and functioning of a Unified Glossary of Legal Terms, coordinating it with the translation of the glossary of terms of the EU acquis.

Thus, the new draft law aims not only to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language but also to create favorable conditions for its development in all spheres of state activity.

This draft law is an important step in the context of the policy of language identity and national security of Ukraine.

Olena Ivanovska

Strengthening the position of the Ukrainian language can have a positive impact on social consciousness and improve the language literacy of the population. In the face of modern challenges, including information aggression, the emphasis on the development of the Ukrainian language in the media space and legislative activity becomes particularly relevant.
