No Political Will in Ukraine’s Parliament to Lower the Draft Age

В Україні немає бажання знизити вік призову до армії в парламентських колах.

Ukraine’s Draft Age Requirements Under Scrutiny

Ukrainian lawmaker Ruslan Horbenko has stated that the Verkhovna Rada lacks the political will to reduce the country’s conscription age. According to him, the current situation on the front lines allows Ukrainian forces to hold their positions without needing additional mobilization measures. Horbenko noted that a potential trigger for revisiting this issue could be a full-scale mobilization by Russia, which might call up between half a million and one million additional troops.

Tech-Savvy Soldiers in High Demand

Horbenko emphasized that the military urgently needs specialists with technological skills, particularly drone operators.

“We need experts who know how to play Counter-Strike, who take part in all these cool tournaments. The ability to work on a laptop is now valued in the army at the level of a lieutenant colonel,” said Ruslan Horbenko.
The deputy explained that young people can operate drones from 500 to 1,000 kilometers away from the front line, a critical aspect of modern warfare.

Horbenko also noted that

“thanks to technological progress in the army, our guys have already managed to stop the enemy on most fronts,” said Ruslan Horbenko.
He pointed out that deep strike units are hitting targets in the enemy’s medium and deep rear. The lawmaker expressed concern about the safety of young people who might be conscripted and highlighted that parents, especially mothers, are deeply worried about this issue.

Horbenko stressed that modern warfare allows for the safety of those who operate drones from secure positions. As a result, the question of lowering the conscription age in Ukraine is not currently on the table, though the situation could shift if the conflict escalates.

Amid the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, mobilization policy remains a key topic of discussion. Given the current front-line dynamics and the military’s technological needs, lawmakers are actively debating ways to boost the effectiveness of military units. However, due to widespread parental concerns about youth safety, any decision to lower the draft age will likely remain unresolved until the front-line situation demands drastic changes.

As the debate over conscription age continues, the need for skilled personnel in modern warfare becomes increasingly evident. The military's focus on technological expertise highlights the demand for effective troops capable of operating advanced systems.
