All-Russian Freestyle Wrestling Competition in Stary Oskol
An All-Russian freestyle wrestling tournament was held in Stary Oskol, located in the Belgorod region, to commemorate Viktor and Alexander Yakovlev. The two men were killed in June 2023. Athletes aged 14 to 16 from the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region took part in the competition. Viktor and Alexander Yakovlev were recognized as heroes, having served as scouts in the 45th Separate Guards Reconnaissance Brigade of the Russian Airborne Forces.
Opening Ceremony and Memorial Tribute
Key figures attended the opening ceremony, including:
- Andrey Bogatov, commander of the fourth reconnaissance and assault company of the Wagner Group
- Mikhail Mamiashvili, President of the Russian Wrestling Federation
- Anatoly Pegov, President of the Russian Bobsleigh Federation
The event served not only as a sporting competition but also as a venue for honoring fallen soldiers.
Separately, news emerged about the death of Russian occupier Georgy Kamalov. At the age of 46, he had played for the team Era Vladivostok from 2003 to 2011. After ending his playing career due to injury, he moved into coaching. In recent years, Kamalov worked with the football club Anri and led it to the level of the Russian Cup.
Dmitry Nizovtsev, commenting on the situation, stated: 'He was up to his ears in debt. That's why he signed a contract. He paid off his debts with the payout. But then he had to go fight. And die. At the age of 46. Such is the grim reality.'
These remarks highlight the difficult circumstances many individuals face when choosing military service amid modern conflicts.
The tournament dedicated to Viktor and Alexander Yakovlev serves not only as a platform for young athletes but also as a symbol of remembrance for the fallen. The presence of prominent figures at the opening ceremony underscores the importance placed on military service in contemporary Russian society. Meanwhile, the case of Georgy Kamalov and his fate illustrates the complex situations people encounter when financial hardship forces them into drastic decisions that lead to loss.
