Fatalities Reported as Drone Attacks Rock Russian Regions
Fresh drone attacks inside Russia on the night of August 4 triggered explosions in multiple regions and left people dead. The strikes targeted both a major oil processing plant and several logistics hubs operated by Wildberries, the Russian e-commerce company. The overnight incidents followed a string of similar drone assaults on Russian critical infrastructure over the past weeks.
In the Samara region, residents described hearing a series of blasts after 3 a.m. as a regional drone alert was issued. One of the targets was the Syzran oil refinery, where witnesses reported thick black smoke rising above the site. Local officials did not officially confirm the impact, but NASA FIRMS detected a thermal anomaly near the refinery on the morning of August 4. The plant belongs to PJSC Rosneft and processes between 7 and 8.5 million tons of crude oil annually.
In Chekhov, in the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported explosions near one of Wildberries' largest warehouse centers. Five people were killed and six others were wounded in that attack. Meanwhile, in the Leningrad region, Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said drones were detected over the area around 5 a.m., and a Wildberries warehouse complex was damaged. In the Krasny Bor warehouse zone, a huge fire broke out, with the affected area estimated at 154,000 square meters.
These attacks on Wildberries logistics facilities came just two days after drones struck an oil refinery in Saratov and another Wildberries depot in the Samara region. A broader wave of assaults has been unfolding since July 25, when an explosion hit a Wildberries warehouse in Yekaterinburg. On the night of July 20, the Moscow region also faced a massive drone attack, according to Russian officials. The monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+ said the situation remains tense and further strikes could not be ruled out.
The overnight explosions show an escalation of the conflict inside Russia, with infrastructure such as refineries and large warehouses increasingly in the crosshairs.
Damage to these facilities could create serious economic fallout and heighten regional instability. Authorities say they are tightening security, but the rising frequency of such attacks points to a growing threat to the country's stability.
