Food supply situation in Ukraine
The Ministry of Agrarian Policy assured that there are no prerequisites for a shortage of products in Ukraine: food supply remains stable. The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Taras Vysotsky, reported that in August, due to intensification of Russian attacks on port infrastructure, Ukraine exported approximately 1.7 million tons of agricultural products through alternative routes, which accounts for about one-third of the potential volume.
Vysotsky noted that there are currently no grounds for a long-term shortage of main types of food products. He emphasized that about 70-80% of food products, excluding grains and oilseeds, are consumed inside Ukraine. Most of the vegetable production is oriented towards the domestic market. Ukraine also exports:
- cereals
- frozen products
- sugar
- oil
- dairy products
- eggs
- certain types of fruits
Rebuilding logistic chains may lead to an overall increase in food prices by approximately 2.5%. Taras Vysotsky explained that fuel prices, energy carriers, and feed can affect the final cost of products. He also recommended that every family should have a basic stock of products and water, but emphasized that the current situation does not require the formation of excessive reserves.
The exact volume of damages from strikes on warehouses is currently being established. Preliminary estimates suggest that the destruction of one large warehouse facility may result in losses amounting to 3-5 million UAH. Furthermore, draft law No. 6068-D on the protection against unfair trading practices has already passed the first reading, and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy systematically advocates for its further elaboration and adoption.
In terms of production volumes available to us and balances, no long-term shortages are currently anticipated for any type of product. Logistics has become more diversified. Somewhere the classic model of 'producer – large warehouse – store' remains, but increasingly more chains 'producer – small warehouse – store' or directly 'producer – store' are being used.
