Defense Ministry Explains How AI Identifies the Enemy for Ukraine's Forces, Saving Up to 90% of Analysts' Time

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense reports that artificial intelligence in the defense forces is saving analysts up to 90 percent of the time they once spent detecting the enemy from photos and videos. In the DELTA combat system, all users now have access to an AI assistant that independently analyzes and spots hostile positions and equipment. This improves the identification of enemy presence indicators, a crucial part of modern combat operations. The move highlights how militaries are embedding AI tools into everyday battlefield workflows.

Since the AI assistant went live, support requests through the web widget have fallen by about 27 percent, while wait times for responses have dropped 30-fold. The assistant now processes roughly a quarter of all web-widget requests, easing the workload for analysts and shortening the kill chain — the process from finding an enemy target to assessing the strike's outcome.

Keeping a Human in the Loop

At the same time, Ukraine continues to follow the human-in-the-loop principle in all AI deployments. This means the technology helps locate and evaluate a target more quickly, but only a person can issue the final strike order, according to the Ministry of Defense. The approach is intended to strike a practical balance between automation and the judgment of military specialists.

Bringing AI into enemy detection could fundamentally reshape tactical battle planning, cutting decision times and improving mission efficiency. For modern military operations, especially on fast-changing battlefields, such capabilities are becoming critical to success. The continued emphasis on human control shows an effort to align technological progress with the ethical realities of military command.
