A wild raccoon with an uncommon spinal condition has won over millions in the United States. Known as Jimothy, this animal shot to viral fame in Seattle thanks to its rare spinal deformity. Local resident Kiana Hall first spotted the raccoon on the evening of July 13 while out for a walk. She posted a five-second clip on Instagram, jokingly calling the creature Jimothy. Within hours, the video had racked up over 5 million views, highlighting the public’s fascination with this unusual animal.
Spinal Deformity and Its Implications
Jimothy, it turns out, was born with a rare spinal deformity, drawing the attention of veterinarians. Another resident of the Ballard neighborhood also shared footage from a security camera showing the same raccoon. Dr. Marcy Logsdon, an associate professor at Washington State University’s veterinary clinic, reviewed the videos and noted that Jimothy’s shortened neck is most likely due to a congenital spinal deformity. Experts suggest this could be short spine syndrome, an extremely rare birth anomaly where vertebrae fuse or compress. This condition has mainly been documented in dogs and is exceptionally uncommon among wild animals.
Dr. Logsdon also observed that the young raccoon moves well and has successfully adapted to its environment. She emphasized that
without a physical exam, it’s impossible to make a definitive diagnosis, but believes the best course is to allow the animal to continue living in the wild. Jimothy has become a symbol of natural adaptation and survival, sparking both sympathy and curiosity in many people.
