AI Robots Enter the Classroom

On July 20th, it was revealed that the Salamanca City Central School District in western New York State purchased an AI-powered robot named Sally for educational purposes. The robot, which cost $57,590, will serve as a physical interface for a large language model. The district acquired it at a significant discount, as its original price was $95,000.

The robot was manufactured by Realbotix, formerly known as Abyss Creations. In 2024, the company rebranded after acquiring Abyss Creations, the maker of RealDoll, a brand famous for producing hyper-realistic adult dolls. However, there is no evidence that Realbotix uses school conversations to train its AI models.

Community Debate and Ethical Concerns

The purchase has sparked public discussion, as the use of artificial intelligence in schools becomes increasingly common. The robot Sally could serve as an innovative tool to enhance learning and student engagement. While this decision may open new educational possibilities, its true impact has yet to be evaluated.

This case highlights a growing interest in integrating AI technology into educational systems, while also raising questions about the ethics and appropriateness of such tools in schools. As similar initiatives emerge, it will be important to monitor their development, as they could significantly reshape teaching methods and student interaction in the future.

As schools explore innovative educational tools, the introduction of AI technology is becoming a prominent trend. This is evident in the Salamanca City Central School District's recent acquisition of the AI robot Sally, which aims to enhance learning experiences. Similarly, humanoid AI tutor robots are also making their way into classrooms across the US, reflecting a broader shift towards integrating artificial intelligence in education. The implications of these advancements warrant careful consideration as they could significantly influence future teaching methodologies.
