Ukrainian Refugees Killed in the United States
A 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Kateryna Tovmash, was killed in a shooting in the US state of North Carolina. She and her boyfriend were shot on February 14 at a private residence. The suspect, 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosnow, who is reportedly the woman's former boyfriend, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder following the incident. This tragic event highlights the vulnerabilities some refugees face after fleeing conflict.
Kateryna Tovmash was originally from Bila Tserkva and had lived in the United States for approximately two years. This case is not isolated, as on August 22, 2025, another 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska, was killed in Charlotte, North Carolina. In that case, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown was detained as a suspect. It is known that Decarlos Brown had served a five-year sentence for armed robbery but was released in 2022 on a written promise.
Concerns Over Refugee Safety
These tragedies have raised concerns about the safety of refugees in the United States, particularly Ukrainians. The situation requires thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The murders of refugees, specifically Ukrainians, in the US underscore serious safety issues for this population. Given that both victims were young women, it may indicate an elevated risk for female refugees who, while seeking protection and a better life, become victims of violence. Continued discussion on measures to ensure their safety and protection in a new country is necessary, especially as many arrive after traumatic experiences.
