Combining Agriculture with Clean Power

The city council of Paxton, Illinois, has given the green light to the Baltimore Drive Solar project, a 4.95 MW solar power plant that will be built on approximately 12 hectares of leased farmland. This innovative installation merges renewable energy production with traditional hay harvesting on the same land.

Innovative Design and Benefits

The solar panels will be elevated up to 3.7 meters high using agrivoltaic technology, enabling farmers to continue mowing grass beneath them. Mounted on single-axis tracking systems, the panels will adjust their position to maximize sunlight capture throughout the day. Additionally, fencing will be installed around the field to protect livestock and enhance safety.

The facility will operate without battery storage, feeding electricity directly into the local distribution grid. Residents, businesses, and public institutions in the area will have the opportunity to purchase shares of the solar energy through a community solar program, potentially reducing their electricity bills by about 10%. Moreover, the project will generate consistent tax revenue for the city without imposing extra demand on water or sewage services.

Baltimore Drive Solar exemplifies how renewable energy can be effectively integrated into agricultural settings, allowing farmers to maintain their operations while contributing to clean energy goals. This dual-use approach could encourage similar developments in other regions, helping to lower carbon emissions and bolster local economies. It also highlights how cutting-edge technologies can advance energy independence and environmental sustainability in rural communities.
