Devastating Russian Attack Hits Sumy on September 18
On September 18, a Russian missile strike targeted a residential high-rise in Sumy, resulting in the deaths of a couple who both worked for the city council. Their son was injured in the attack. In total, nine people were wounded across the city, including two children. The Russian military reportedly launched six or seven KAB precision-guided bombs, damaging at least eight apartment buildings, two educational institutions, and over twenty vehicles.
The deceased couple were staff members of the Sumy City Executive Committee: Roman Trepalin led the procurement department, while Alla Korniyenko was head of a division within the legal department. The attack occurred in the evening hours of September 18. By 10:10 PM, five residents, including one child, had been confirmed wounded. Later reports from the National Police increased the count of injured to nine, which included a 7-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.
Condition of the Injured and Official Responses
Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, stated that three of the wounded remain in critical condition.
“Medical teams are providing all necessary care,”he assured. Rescue workers successfully extracted four individuals from the rubble—among them the 7-year-old boy—and transferred them to emergency services.
“They were wonderful, kind people and highly skilled professionals. I deeply sympathize with the families and friends of the deceased. Our entire team shares in this grief,”expressed Deputy Mayor Rimma Bykova.
That evening, Russian forces also struck the village of Tekstylne in Kherson Oblast and the city of Balakliia in Kharkiv region, causing four fatalities and two injuries. Additionally, Russian aircraft carried out two airstrikes on central Odessa the same day, injuring ten people, including two emergency responders. These attacks highlight the ongoing aggression that continues to claim innocent civilian lives.
