Authorities Respond and Investigate

According to the Vinnytsia regional police, 'preliminary information indicates that around 8:30 AM in Vinnytsia, an eighth-grader brought an object resembling a training grenade to the school and left it on a desk. Two peers picked it up, after which a detonation occurred.' It has been revealed that the grenade came from a relative of the student who serves in the military.

'Unfortunately, a child brought a grenade to school. It happened during their first lesson. Later, we found out that the student told other children he had such an item, claiming it was a safe plastic training device. But he hadn't taken it out of his backpack. Then, as events unfolded, an explosion occurred. Fortunately, no one was seriously harmed. The children have no visible injuries. Emergency services arrived quickly. Doctors examined all children who had complaints, and thankfully, there were few. Parents were notified. Specialists are now clarifying all the circumstances.' A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses the illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives. Previously in Vinnytsia, police detained a man for storing ammunition and threatening his wife, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety in educational settings. The penalty under Article 263 carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison.

This incident underscores the critical need for safety protocols in schools, as even imitation items can lead to hazardous situations. Authorities and educational institutions must take steps to create a secure environment for students and teach children about the dangers of handling unknown objects. Such cases require thorough analysis to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
