Illegal Hunting Incident in the Kyiv Region
Authorities in the Vyshhorod district of Kyiv Oblast have opened a criminal investigation into the illegal killing of a champion stag named Runi. The animal was shot in the neck on private land in the village of Makarivka. The stag's owner, Serhiy Boyarchukov, confirmed that Runi was an officially recognized Ukrainian record-holder under the international CIC system for the size of its antlers, having earned the 'Golden Horns' title. Trophy hunting and the illegal wildlife trade are significant issues in Eastern Europe, often linked to organized crime.
A police response team and investigative unit from the Vyshhorod district department arrived at the scene and confirmed the deer died from a gunshot wound. Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Part 1 of Article 248 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which covers illegal hunting. Potential penalties under this article include:
- a fine,
- restriction of liberty for up to three years,
- confiscation of hunting equipment and the game.
Broader Poaching Problems in Ukraine
This case is not isolated. In the Lviv region, two poachers opened fire on a forester's vehicle, mistaking it for an animal. The shooter used a rifle equipped with a thermal imaging scope from a distance of 100-150 meters. The targeted vehicle was a Suzuki Jimny.
Separately, the environmental prosecutor's office in Lviv has launched an investigation into the illegal hunting of European bison, a species listed in Ukraine's Red Book. Two bison were killed in the Zubrytske forestry, indicating a troubling rise in poaching activity across the country.
This incident underscores the severe and growing problem of poaching in Ukraine.
The killing of a record-holding deer and attacks on forestry personnel highlight the urgent need for stricter controls and harsher penalties for illegal hunting. Such activities not only threaten wildlife but also endanger human lives. The response from law enforcement could be a critical step in combating this issue and protecting the nation's natural heritage.
