Mycotoxin Contamination Across the Plant-Based Range
All 212 plant-based meat and dairy substitutes purchased from UK retail chains were found to contain mycotoxins in a study by the University of Parma and Cranfield University. The concentrations remained below European Union safety limits, but the researchers caution that small doses can accumulate over time and eventually create serious health risks.
The paper, released at 23:46 on 28 August, covered several product categories:
- plant-based burgers
- vegan sausages
- chicken fillet alternatives
- oat, almond, and soy milk
At least one of 19 different mycotoxins appeared in every sample tested, and some products contained several types at once. The contamination is linked to the grains, legumes, and seeds used in these products, which can be affected by mold during growing, harvesting, or storage.
Health Risks and What to Do
According to the researchers, the main danger lies in long-term accumulation of small amounts of these toxins rather than a single high level. Prolonged exposure may harm the liver and kidneys, suppress immune function, and raise cancer risk. They also note that it is unrealistic to remove mycotoxins entirely from agricultural products.
“There is no need to panic or stop eating a varied diet,” the team advises.
