Remembering Ukraine’s Fallen Warriors in Zaporizhzhia
In Zaporizhzhia’s Metallurgists Park, a poignant tribute has grown with the addition of 85 new bells on the Memory Tree, each dedicated to Ukrainian soldiers who lost their lives defending the nation against Russian aggression. Among these is a bell honoring Serhiy Shyshkin, a mortar crew commander who fell on April 17, 2024, in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Serhiy had been mobilized in January 2023 and earned multiple awards for his valor. This year, he and his wife were to celebrate their 31st wedding anniversary.
The Memory Tree itself is a nine-meter-tall metal installation unveiled on October 18, 2024. Instead of leaves, its branches are adorned with metal tube bells inscribed with the names of soldiers from Zaporizhzhia city and region. The unveiling ceremony brought together a wide array of participants, including:
- government officials
- veteran organizations
- members of the Bayda youth movement
- military personnel
- rescue workers
- police officers
- families of the fallen defenders
The gathering honored the fallen with a moment of silence and laid flowers at the base of the Memory Tree.
“My husband rarely spoke about what happened on the front lines. It turned out he saved comrades’ lives several times and even captured Russian soldiers. I didn’t realize he was such a hero.” Svitlana, wife of Serhiy Shyshkin
The installation of these bells serves as a powerful gesture to commemorate those who sacrificed everything for Ukraine’s independence. This memorial not only keeps the memory of the war’s toll alive but also provides a space for collective remembrance and support for the families of the fallen. Initiatives like this help strengthen national identity and unity during the country’s most challenging times.
Zaporizhzhia, a key city in southeastern Ukraine, continues to be a focal point for honoring the courage and sacrifice seen throughout the ongoing conflict.
