Vandalism Incident in Zhovkva
An act of vandalism has shaken the western Ukrainian town of Zhovkva, where unknown perpetrators doused a statue of the Virgin Mary with a red liquid on Vicheva Square. Local authorities have classified this as the first-ever attack on a religious shrine in the town’s history. They have formally requested the National Police to launch an investigation into the matter.
Historical Significance of Zhovkva
Founded in 1597, Zhovkva boasts a rich past, notably serving as the residence of Polish King John III Sobieski in the 17th century. The targeted statue stands on Vicheva Square, the town’s central plaza, which forms part of a Renaissance-era architectural complex protected as a cultural heritage site.
The incident was reported by Ihor Muravsky, head of the municipal utility company Zhovkva City Production Department for Housing and Communal Services, in a Facebook post. This attack is part of a troubling pattern: in October 2024, vandals damaged 23 military graves at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv. Additionally, in Lviv, perpetrators poured an unidentified substance on a female sculpture and attempted to set it on fire. These events have sparked growing concern among residents and authorities about a rise in vandalism.
