Shortlist for Ukraine's Next Head Coach

Following the departure of Serhiy Rebrov, the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) has narrowed down the search for the national team's new head coach to three candidates. UAF President Andriy Shevchenko aims to make a final decision by the end of April. The contenders for the role are Myron Markevych, Igor Jovićević, and Andrea Maldera.

What to Know About the Candidates

  • Myron Markevych:

At 75 years old, Markevych brings extensive coaching experience. He managed Lviv-based Karpaty from June 2023 to July 2024, overseeing 29 matches with a record of 20 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses. He previously coached the Ukrainian national team in 2010, achieving 3 wins and 1 draw in 4 games. Notably, he led Dnipro to the 2015 Europa League final.

  • Igor Jovićević:

Jovićević has worked with several clubs, including Karpaty, Celje, Dinamo Zagreb, Dnipro, Shakhtar Donetsk, Al-Raed, and Ludogorets. This diverse background could be a key factor in his candidacy for the national team's top job.

  • Andrea Maldera:

Maldera served as an assistant coach for the Ukrainian national team under Andriy Shevchenko from 2016 to 2021. After that, he joined English club Brighton, and his most recent role was as an assistant at French side Marseille. It is worth noting that Maldera has no experience as a head coach.

Rebrov's Departure: Full Details

Serhiy Rebrov ended his tenure with the UAF by mutual agreement. He had been in charge of the national team since June 2023, but the squad failed to qualify for the World Cup in North America, losing 1–3 to Sweden in the playoff semifinal. Despite stepping down, Rebrov will remain with the association as UAF Vice President and continue as a member of its executive committee.

The selection of a new head coach for Ukraine is a critical step for the team's future, especially after the unsuccessful campaign under Rebrov. Each candidate brings unique strengths that could shape the national team's strategy in upcoming international competitions. Choosing a coach who can motivate the squad and unlock its potential will be vital for on-field success going forward.

As the search for a new head coach intensifies, understanding the circumstances surrounding Rebrov's exit becomes crucial. His departure has left a significant impact on the team's structure and future strategies, making the selection of a successor even more critical for the upcoming challenges.
