Dance Teachers Over Academics: Former Official Slams School Performances

Вчителі танців важливіші за навчання: колишній чиновник критикує шкільні виступи

Criticism of Mass Teacher Dance Routines

Ihor Likarchuk, a Honored Educator of Ukraine and former director of the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment, has strongly criticized the trend of teachers performing mass dance routines at school events. He argues these performances are designed to create eye-catching content for social media rather than focusing on the quality of education. Likarchuk noted that while parents applaud such shows, they increasingly turn to private tutors to compensate for the lack of knowledge provided in schools.

Modern Trends in Pedagogy

Likarchuk's critique targets teachers who try to keep up with current trends by seeking popularity on social media. He stated:

'We applaud teachers for their ability to shake their bodies, but we pay huge sums to outsiders for what schools should provide by default—knowledge.' - Ihor Likarchuk

In his view, true pedagogy involves challenge, cultivating willpower, and sharpening the mind. Likarchuk emphasized that

'when a teacher stoops to the level of bloggers, trying to out-dance the social media feed, they lose. Because education is not a show.' - Ihor Likarchuk

To address school attendance issues, the Cabinet of Ministers has introduced new requirements. Education authorities are now required to immediately report to child services any students who are not studying or have been absent for extended periods. While these measures aim to improve the education system, Likarchuk insists that teachers must avoid distractions like performances and stay focused on their core mission—teaching students.

Likarchuk's comments highlight ongoing discussions about educational quality in Ukraine. His criticism of mass dance performances points to a potential conflict between entertainment and learning that may affect student outcomes. The Cabinet's new attendance monitoring requirements reflect growing attention to educational challenges, but Likarchuk stresses that teachers must remain committed to their primary role in the learning process.

As the education system faces scrutiny, the issue of student retention has also come to the forefront. Recent reports indicate a worrying trend of students seeking education opportunities abroad, raising concerns about the quality of learning at home.
