During the night of May 24, 2026, a large-scale combined attack struck Kyiv, damaging civilian infrastructure in the city center. Among the affected sites are the historic Main Post Office on Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The assault, which involved ballistic missiles and attack drones, caused extensive damage. At the Main Post Office building—the headquarters of Ukrposhta JSC—large sections of windows were blown out across multiple floors, and the entrance doors and facade elements were hit. No information on casualties among Ukrposhta staff has been reported so far.

The attack also struck the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, forcing its administration to cancel upcoming performances due to the destruction of the historic structure. Additionally, the premises of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, suffered severe damage.

Reactions and Aftermath

Ukrposhta CEO Ihor Smilianskyi commented on the situation: 'As a result of last night's strikes, the main Ukrposhta office on Maidan was damaged. Well, we had been planning some renovations for a while—so this gives us a chance to quickly restore it, just like all our other branches after nights like these.'

This incident once again underscores the critical need to protect civilian sites and infrastructure during armed conflict. The events have sparked public concern and demand an urgent response from the relevant authorities.

The shelling of Kyiv on May 24, 2026, highlights the severity of the current situation in the country and the threats that military action poses to civilians. Damage to key cultural and infrastructure landmarks reflects the scale of destruction, which could have long-term consequences for society. The importance of safeguarding civilian assets is becoming increasingly evident amid rising regional tensions, requiring decisive action from both the state and the international community.
