Massive Strike on Kyiv and Surrounding Regions: Over 50 Missiles and Up to 700 Drones Used, Resulting in Fatalities and Injuries

Coordinated Assault on Kyiv and Other Areas

In the early hours of May 24, the Russian military launched a large-scale attack targeting Kyiv, the Kyiv region, as well as Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy oblasts. The assault left two people dead in the capital and wounded 56 others, including two children. Thirty of the injured required hospitalization. Vitali Klitschko reported:

The enemy deployed more than 50 missiles and up to 700 drones in this offensive. Destruction and fires were recorded at over 40 locations across Kyiv, including residential buildings and a shopping center. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a missile struck a five-story building, killing one person. A drone also hit a nine-story apartment block between the 8th and 9th floors. The 'Kvadrat' shopping mall in Lukyanivka was completely burned out, while the Lukyanivka market suffered approximately 80% damage. The subway depth where the blast was felt reached 69 meters.

Impact on Civilians

The attack also targeted the Bila Tserkva district, where an RS-26 Rubezh (Oreshnik) intermediate-range ballistic missile hit its objective. This missile was launched from the Kapustin Yar test site. In the Fastiv district, two women were wounded, and in the Bucha district, a man was injured. In Dnipropetrovsk oblast, particularly the Nikopol area, seven people were affected, including two children. Two men are in serious condition, while two women and a three-month-old and a four-year-old child were hospitalized.

In Cherkasy oblast, a drone struck a residential high-rise, igniting apartments from the 5th to the 9th floors. Ihor Taburets stated:

“As a result of the attack, 11 people were injured, including two children. Most victims received medical assistance on-site, while three others were hospitalized by ambulance crews” - Ihor Taburets

In the Zolotonosha district, a cruise missile hit the grounds of an inactive farm; no casualties were reported.

Following the assault in Kyiv, tram routes Nos. 14, 15, and 18 were temporarily suspended. Missile debris damaged the Lobanovskyi Dynamo Stadium. Defense Ministry adviser Serhiy Sternenko noted that the RS-26 Rubezh missile is nuclear-capable but was used without a nuclear warhead. Firefighting efforts took place in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Obolonskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Pecherskyi districts. In the Kyiv region, destruction was recorded in the Fastiv, Bucha, Obukhiv, Brovary, Vyshhorod, Boryspil, and Bila Tserkva districts.

This attack stands as one of the most extensive in recent times, underscoring the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine and the severe threats faced by civilians. The explosions and destruction have inflicted significant damage on infrastructure, complicating daily life for residents. Authorities continue to provide medical care to the injured and work to mitigate the aftermath, further straining the humanitarian situation in the affected regions.
