Drone Attacks Target Odesa and Its Region in February 2024
In February 2024, a series of Russian drone strikes inflicted severe damage on residential buildings, civilian facilities, and energy infrastructure in Odesa and the surrounding Odesa region. These attacks are part of a broader Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian cities far from the front lines. Notably, on the night of February 12, a Russian assault damaged a key infrastructure facility and a local business center in Odesa.
The following night, on February 13, a drone struck a multi-story residential building, damaging apartments on its upper floors. Other strikes in the city caused destruction to utility structures in a recreational area and hit a commercial building, sparking a fire on the premises.
Strikes Cripple Energy Systems
Earlier, on February 10, a strike on the region's energy infrastructure partially cut power to settlements in three communities. Critical infrastructure sites had to rely on backup generator power. This followed a massive barrage on February 7 that targeted Ukraine's energy grid, worsening the situation in Kyiv and six settlements in the Kherson region. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an extended emergency meeting to coordinate the response to these attacks.
These events underscore the persistent threat to civilian safety in Ukraine and highlight the severe strain on the country's energy infrastructure, with potential long-term consequences for the region. The targeting of residential and commercial properties signals an escalation in hostilities that endangers thousands of lives and regional stability. The response from Ukrainian authorities and the international community to these incidents will be crucial in shaping the future course of the conflict.
