Drone Attack Targets Russia
In the early hours of July 18, drones struck the Moscow and Tambov regions of the Russian Federation, sparking fires at several sites, including an oil depot in Noginsk and Wildberries warehouses in Elektrostal and Kotovsk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strikes targeted logistical hubs and a petroleum facility inside Russia.
The nighttime drone assault led to significant damage. In Noginsk, located in the Moscow region, a blaze erupted at an oil storage base. In Elektrostal, also in the Moscow region, a warehouse belonging to Russia's largest online marketplace, Wildberries, caught fire. Another Wildberries warehouse was hit in Kotovsk, situated in the Tambov region. Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported 24 injured individuals within the Moscow area, while Russian authorities claim two people were hurt at the Noginsk oil depot. Tambov Region Governor Yevgeny Pervyshov stated that seven people died and 25 were wounded in Kotovsk.
Aftermath of the Strike
The combined floor area of the targeted Wildberries warehouses totals 188,000 square meters. The attack on these storage facilities was confirmed by the 1st Separate Center of the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine). President Zelenskyy commented:
“In response to Russian strikes on our civilian infrastructure, on our cities and communities, two major logistical facilities were hit—in the Moscow and Tambov regions.”Additionally, an oil installation inside Russia was struck. Explosions were also reported in Tver, according to monitoring channels such as Exilenova+.
Among the reactions, a worker at the Kotovsk facility noted: 'The warehouse caught fire after the attack.' Meanwhile, the 1st Separate Center of the SBU remarked:
“When karma strikes, fire extinguishers are no help to a savage society.”
This attack is part of ongoing military operations, during which Ukrainian forces have been targeting assets in the Azov and Black Seas, as well as in occupied Crimea.
The incident highlights the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides striking critical infrastructure. The assault on Russian logistics hubs may be seen as a direct response to previous strikes on Ukrainian cities, signaling intensified combat operations and a potential further deterioration of the situation in the region. The rising casualty count and destruction underscore the severity of a war that has now been raging for an extended period.
The recent drone strikes in Russia echo a similar incident that occurred in Bryansk on June 22, highlighting the ongoing escalation of tensions in the region. These attacks not only target military logistics but also raise questions about the security of critical infrastructure.
