Russian Strike on Kyiv Damages Opera and Ballet Theater

Російський удар по Києву завдав шкоди театру опери та балету.

Attack on Kyiv on May 24

During a massive overnight assault combining missiles and drones launched by the Russian Federation against Kyiv on May 24, several key buildings were damaged. Among them was the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, which had been scheduled to host a children's ballet performance of 'Thumbelina' by composer Yukhym Rusynov. As a result of the shelling, the ballet show has been canceled; however, all purchased tickets remain valid, and the performance has been rescheduled for a later date.

An assessment of the extent of the destruction is currently underway on the theater grounds, but there is no information about any casualties among the theater staff.

Damaged Sites

In addition to the theater, other structures were hit during the attack:

  • The building of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Kyiv;
  • The premises of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
The administration of the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater stated: 'Due to damage to the theater building caused by the massive overnight attack, we are forced to cancel today's performance of the ballet Thumbelina.'

The events of May 24 underscore the critical need to protect cultural institutions and international diplomatic missions amid armed aggression. Damage to such sites poses a serious threat not only to the country's cultural life but also to international relations. These attacks could have long-term consequences for Ukraine's cultural heritage and diplomatic ties.

The recent attack on Kyiv highlights the vulnerability of cultural institutions, a situation echoed by similar incidents across Ukraine. For instance, a recent drone strike at the Skovoroda Museum in the Kharkiv region underscores the urgent need for safeguarding these vital spaces amidst ongoing conflicts. Such assaults not only damage physical structures but also threaten the preservation of national heritage.
