Drone Strikes on Russian Oil Depots Disrupt Crude Production

Атаки безпілотників на російські нафтосховища порушують видобуток сировини.

Ukrainian Drone Attacks Target Russian Oil Infrastructure

Ukrainian drones continue to hit Russian oil refineries and pumping stations, severely impacting fuel supplies within the Russian Federation. Analyst Mikhail Krutikhin points out that these strikes aim to destroy key nodes of the oil infrastructure. According to reports, Russia's gasoline output dropped by 4.8% in the first quarter, signaling serious trouble in the country's energy sector.

The attacks specifically target pumping stations along major pipeline corridors used to transport crude from Western Siberia to European Russia. One such station is located near Perm, and another in Bashkortostan. Notably, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug produces 42% of all Russian oil, making this region critically important to the nation's oil infrastructure.

Impact on Industrial Facilities

In addition, strikes have hit industrial sites, including a cluster of refineries near Samara that includes the Kuibyshev, Novokuibyshev, and Syzran plants, all owned by Rosneft. The Novokuibyshev refinery suffered severe damage and was shut down for an extended period, producing neither gasoline nor diesel. Lukoil's refinery in Kstovo, near Nizhny Novgorod, was also damaged.

"Oil producers and extraction companies will be forced to shut down wells because there will simply be nowhere to send the crude."

Disruptions to crude oil transport from Western Siberia could lead to two main consequences:

  • First, there won't be enough oil for either exports or refining;
  • Second, it could force a halt in extraction operations.

This is especially critical for Moscow, which relies on a ring of pipelines supplying gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. Transporting fuel from the Urals, Siberia, or the Far East is becoming increasingly difficult, as rail and truck deliveries are time-consuming, expensive, and limited in volume.

As a result, Ukrainian drone strikes are having a serious impact on Russian oil infrastructure, potentially leading to widespread fuel supply problems across the country.

These developments highlight the vulnerability of Russia's energy infrastructure and the economic consequences of military actions. The decline in fuel production and the potential halt in crude extraction could have long-term effects on both the domestic market and exports. Amid global energy challenges and sanctions, Russia may face even greater difficulties in meeting its fuel needs.

The ongoing drone strikes have not only targeted key oil infrastructure but have also significantly impaired Russia's overall refining capabilities.
