European Commission President Voices Alarm

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has expressed deep concern over recent assaults on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. These incidents occurred on October 5 and 6 near the Romanian coastline and within Bulgaria's economic zone. On October 5, a Turkish ship carrying Ukrainian grain was struck and sunk off Romania’s coast, reportedly targeted by Russian drones. The following day, two additional commercial vessels were hit inside Bulgaria’s maritime economic area.

Impact of Attacks on Civilian Shipping

Addressing the situation on social media platform X, von der Leyen highlighted the vulnerability of innocent crews aboard these merchant ships, emphasizing that "lives are already being lost at sea." While investigations into the exact circumstances continue, she stressed the gravity of the attacks on civilian maritime traffic, calling them unacceptable. She also expressed strong solidarity with EU member states on the eastern frontier, stating, "We stand firmly united with our countries along the eastern flank."

These incidents come amid a sharp decline in Ukrainian grain exports, which have dropped to a third of previous levels.

The assaults on commercial shipping in the Black Sea underscore escalating dangers for civilian maritime activities in a region critical to global food supply chains. Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, such attacks threaten to disrupt international trade and contribute to rising food prices worldwide. The European Commission’s response signals a readiness within the EU to take necessary measures to safeguard its members and maintain regional security.

As tensions rise in the Black Sea, the recent attack that resulted in the death of the captain of a Turkish cargo ship carrying corn highlights the precarious situation for maritime operations in the region. Such incidents not only threaten lives but also jeopardize the stability of essential grain supplies.
