Hungary's Foreign Minister Criticizes Ukrainian Conscription

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has publicly denounced Ukraine's military mobilization, framing it as an 'open hunt for people' that occurs daily. He expressed support for Ukrainians attempting to illegally cross the border to avoid conscription, stating that Ukrainian border guards are using every available method to apprehend draft evaders. This criticism comes amid a broader European debate on supporting Ukraine's defense while managing the human cost of the war.

Arrest Highlights Tensions

In a related incident, a man was recently arrested in Hungary for attempting to help five Ukrainians cross the border illegally. The Hungarian consulate in Berehove has provided the arrested individual with consular protection. Szijjártó cited this case as evidence of the urgent need to end the war and halt what he termed the 'violent' conscription process.

Szijjártó has previously accused Ukraine of attempting to interfere in Hungarian elections and violating democratic principles. He asserted that 'everyone is tired of the war' and that Ukrainians do not wish to become victims of the violence accompanying mobilization.

He called for a swift resolution to the conflict to alleviate human suffering.

The Hungarian minister's statement underscores the escalating diplomatic friction between Budapest and Kyiv. His condemnation of the draft and implied support for illegal border crossings could further strain bilateral relations, particularly regarding security and humanitarian cooperation. Such incidents highlight the complex challenges for Ukrainian civilians and may increase pressure for international dialogue to address the conflict's human dimension.
