Hungary stated that it does not support the European Commission's idea to restrict temporary protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age. Prime Minister Peter Madyar emphasized that even if the rules change at the EU level, his country will continue to provide asylum to those who have fled Ukraine. This information is reported by European Truth.

Temporary protection for Ukrainians: Hungary's position

During the debates in the Hungarian parliament, the leader of the Mi Hazánk party, László Toroczkai, addressed Prime Minister Peter Madyar with a question regarding the European Commission's proposal to limit temporary protection for Ukrainian men who do not have permission to leave Ukraine due to military obligations.

According to the deputy, Budapest should clearly express its position, as a significant Hungarian community lives in Transcarpathia, which may be affected by possible changes.

In response, Peter Madyar stated that the government has already expressed disagreement with such an initiative. According to him, during the open meeting of the EU Council on internal affairs, the Minister of the Interior of Hungary, Gábor Pócsfai, reported that the country does not support the respective proposal of the European Commission.

Ukrainian men in the EU: what will change after March 2027

The Prime Minister emphasized that even if new rules come into force after March 2027, it will not prevent Hungary from continuing to provide asylum to people arriving in the country to avoid mobilization.

At the same time, there is currently no final decision at the level of the European Union. The European Commission has proposed extending the Directive on temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, but making an exception for individuals who left Ukraine to avoid military service.

It is expected that EU countries will address this issue in July 2026. If the member states cannot reach an agreement, discussions may be postponed to September.

It should be reminded that the Prime Minister of Hungary Peter Madyar has announced restrictions on the influx of labor migrants from countries outside the European Union.
