Hungary Warns Ukraine Following Halt of 'Druzhba' Oil Pipeline

Hungary has threatened to halt gas and electricity supplies to Ukraine, escalating a dispute over the suspended 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó warned of potential joint countermeasures with allies if Ukraine does not resume oil transportation through the conduit. He accused Kyiv of halting the supply for purely political reasons.

Szijjártó placed full responsibility for the supply issues on Ukraine, asserting there were no technical, engineering, or physical reasons for the oil stoppage. He claimed the motivation was political, suggesting Ukraine aimed to influence the upcoming Hungarian elections.

'The Ukrainians want us to go into elections with the price of petrol at 1000 forints, thereby helping the 'Tisza' party, but we are not fools!' stated Péter Szijjártó.

Potential Repercussions for Energy Security

Budapest is now considering stopping exports of electricity and natural gas to Ukraine. This follows a prior halt in diesel exports and signals a significant escalation. The 'Druzhba' pipeline has been a point of political contention for months, with Hungary repeatedly accusing Kyiv of obstructing energy cooperation.

'If the Ukrainians continue to hinder us, we are prepared to take further joint countermeasures,' emphasized Péter Szijjártó.

This standoff marks a sharp deterioration in Ukraine-Hungary relations, fueled by ongoing political and economic disputes. The suspension of the 'Druzhba' pipeline could seriously impact the energy security of both nations, which rely on stable energy supplies. Hungary's potential moves to restrict gas and power could escalate the conflict and worsen the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, which is already grappling with the consequences of a full-scale war.
