Cash Transport Vehicles Seized in Hungary

On March 5, Hungarian authorities intercepted two cash-in-transit vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank. The vehicles were carrying a large sum of cash as part of a regular transport operation for currency and bank metals between Austria's Raiffeisen Bank and Oschadbank of Ukraine. The incident occurred while the vehicles were under escort by a team of seven cash collection service employees.

Reactions from Ukrainian and Hungarian Officials

Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, commented on the situation in a Facebook post, questioning the legality of moving such a large amount of physical currency. He asked:

'Why were Ukrainians transporting $900 million and €420 million in cash within Hungary? What was it spent on and in whose interests? How much of it was spent in Hungary and for whose benefit?' Péter Szijjártó

In response, the Ukrainian side also reacted to the incident. Georgiy Tykhy stated:

'The thief's hat is on fire... We await the return of the stolen funds and are preparing specific legal measures. We will also demand justice and accountability.' Georgiy Tykhy

These statements underscore the heightened tensions between Ukraine and Hungary following this event. This diplomatic friction occurs against a backdrop of existing strain in bilateral relations. Furthermore, on the same day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed a willingness to use force to compel Ukraine to resume the transit of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline, adding another layer of complexity to the already tense situation between the two nations.

This incident could have serious repercussions for Ukraine-Hungary bilateral relations, as it touches not only on financial matters but also on mutual trust. The questioning by Hungarian officials regarding the legality of transporting such large cash sums may signal an escalation in political tension, especially when viewed alongside comments about Russian oil transit. Observers note that the unfolding of these events could significantly impact state relations in both economic and political spheres, with potential implications for regional stability.
