Ambassador Yuliia Sokolovska’s Mission to Galicia

Ukraine’s top diplomat in Spain, Yuliia Sokolovska, recently traveled to Galicia for high-level talks. She met with Alfonso Rueda, head of the Galician government, and Miguel Ángel Santalices Vieira, president of the regional parliament. Their discussions centered on boosting economic ties between Ukraine and this northwestern Spanish region.

A key outcome of the visit was an agreement to hand over a draft Protocol of Intent for cooperation with Galicia to the Odesa region. Sokolovska also extended an invitation to Rueda to visit Odesa this autumn to formally sign the document.

Addressing Critical Issues

Beyond economic matters, the meetings covered Ukraine’s security and humanitarian challenges, as well as the fallout from Russia’s aggression. The officials also highlighted support for Ukrainians who have found refuge in Galicia. This visit not only strengthened bilateral ties but also raised awareness across the Spanish region about the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Sokolovska’s trip underscores the vital role of international backing for Ukraine amid the protracted war and its drive to forge stronger economic partnerships. Collaboration with Spanish regions like Galicia could pave the way for expanded trade and investment—a crucial need as Ukraine looks toward post-conflict recovery. The invitation for Galicia’s leader to visit Odesa signals a clear intent to deepen these bonds and cement cooperation at every level.
