Ukraine and Japan Forge Closer Ties in Defense Tech

Ukraine is ready to collaborate with Japan on defense technology, particularly in the production and enhancement of unmanned aerial systems, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. In an interview with Kyodo News, as confirmed by the publication Glavcom, Sybiha stated that Kyiv is open to engagement based on Japan’s level of readiness and expressed a desire to share battlefield experience with Tokyo. This offer comes as Japan recently relaxed its arms export rules, opening the door for negotiations on supplying military equipment to Ukraine.

Sybiha is scheduled to visit Japan in the second half of the year. He also announced plans for a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the G7 summit in France this June. Such a meeting could mark a significant step in strengthening military cooperation between the two nations, as both seek to address evolving security challenges.

Warning on Sanctions Relief

Sybiha also cautioned against any temporary exemptions from sanctions on Russian oil that might be proposed by the United States. He emphasized that

“now is not the time to ease pressure on Russia,”
arguing that any decisions to weaken or lift sanctions are misguided because they slow down peace efforts and the peace process.

The minister’s concern stems from a shortage of oil supplies due to the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a situation triggered by the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran.

Sybiha’s statements underscore a deepening defense partnership between Ukraine and Japan, which could have far-reaching implications for both countries amid new security threats. At the same time, his remarks on sanctions highlight the critical need to maintain pressure on Russia during ongoing conflicts, a stance that may influence international policy and economic dynamics in the region.
