Ukrainian Officials Meet with European Court of Human Rights President

In a key diplomatic engagement in Chișinău, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Iryna Mudra held talks with European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) President Mattias Guyomar. The discussions centered on the Court's recent ruling in the case of Ukraine and the Netherlands versus Russia, as well as broader international accountability mechanisms.

Sybiha expressed his gratitude to the Court for what he described as a historic decision—one that delivers not only a legal judgment but also a powerful political and moral message from Europe to the aggressor. He emphasized that the Court had confirmed that Russia’s actions against Ukraine are unprecedented in the history of the Council of Europe.

Advancing Plans for a Special Tribunal

The conversation also focused on the establishment of a Special Tribunal to address the crime of aggression against Ukraine. Sybiha stressed that Ukraine is drawing on the legal reasoning and precedents set by the ECHR in building this tribunal, as well as within the framework of the International Commission on Claims related to Ukraine.

This meeting underscores the deepening collaboration between Ukraine and European institutions amid the ongoing war with Russia and the pursuit of justice mechanisms. The ECHR’s ruling could serve as a foundation for Ukraine’s future legal efforts and help secure international recognition of the crimes committed during the aggression.

Creating the Special Tribunal represents a crucial step toward holding perpetrators accountable and delivering justice for the victims of the conflict.

As Ukraine advances its plans for a Special Tribunal, the recent developments highlight the necessity for comprehensive mechanisms to support victims of aggression.
