Prime Ministers of Ukraine and Moldova Convene in Kyiv
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky and Moldovan Prime Minister Vasyl Tofan met in Kyiv to discuss their countries’ coordinated efforts toward European Union integration, regional security enhancement, expanded border control, energy collaboration, and revitalization of intergovernmental cooperation frameworks. During the meeting, both leaders signed a Military-Technical Cooperation Agreement to strengthen defense ties.
'Ukraine and Moldova are advancing side by side toward EU membership. Ukraine’s accession is vital for Moldova’s security, just as Moldova’s EU entry is crucial for Ukraine’s safety.' Serhiy Koretsky
A key outcome of the discussions included an agreement to reduce railway transportation costs, addressing challenges caused by Russian aggression in the Black Sea. The two nations also committed to extending joint border control operations at two additional crossing points. Koretsky emphasized, 'Together with Moldova, we are prepared to expand joint control to two more checkpoints. We will soon finalize the necessary agreement.'
Strengthening Energy Ties and Future Initiatives
Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership, particularly regarding gas transit through the Trans-Balkan corridor. The Ukrainian Prime Minister highlighted, 'We value our energy collaboration, especially agreements on gas transit via the Trans-Balkan route. Moldovan companies are already utilizing Ukrainian gas storage facilities.'
Additionally, both parties agreed to reactivate the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation and to reinstate the 'Odesa Triangle' format, which brings together Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania. Koretsky stated, 'We plan to hold the first prime ministers’ meeting of the Triangle soon,' expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Tofan and the Moldovan government for their ongoing support of Ukraine.
This high-level dialogue underscores the critical role of regional cooperation amid shared challenges and mutual ambitions for European integration. In light of escalating security threats stemming from Russian hostilities, deepening collaboration between Kyiv and Chișinău is essential for the stability and resilience of both nations. The agreements reached and joint projects outlined during the summit lay a foundation for enhanced bilateral relations and bolster their positions within the European Union framework.
