Small Modular Reactors in Ukraine
Ukraine has the potential to become the first Eastern European nation to roll out small modular reactors (SMRs) on a commercial scale and begin exporting related technological solutions to the European Union. Energy expert Oleksandr Katsuba noted that the war has acted as a catalyst for transforming Ukraine’s power system. According to Katsuba, the world is witnessing a nuclear renaissance as countries return to atomic energy to achieve climate neutrality.
Advantages of Small Modular Reactors
Small modular reactors (SMRs) present a promising option because they can be built more quickly than conventional large power units and placed closer to end users. Oleksandr Katsuba emphasized that
“the energy architecture of 21st-century Europe is being shaped right now. And Ukraine has a chance not just to integrate into it, but to become one of its architects.”
Ukraine holds significant advantages for advancing SMRs, including:
- a strong nuclear engineering tradition;
- experience operating large nuclear power plants;
- unique expertise in managing an energy system during wartime.
The future energy system in Ukraine should be designed as a flexible model, combining nuclear generation as a baseload, renewable sources, gas-fired power, and storage to ensure balance and adaptability. A pivotal step in this direction was the synchronization of Ukraine’s power grid with the European ENTSO-E network in 2022. SMR technology is being actively discussed in the United States, Poland, and the United Kingdom, reflecting growing international interest. Ukraine is well-positioned to lead the adoption of innovative nuclear energy solutions in Eastern Europe.
Developing small modular reactors in Ukraine could be a major milestone not only for the country’s energy security but also for its economic growth. Amid rising demands for environmental sustainability and energy independence, deploying SMRs may help Ukraine become a key player in the European energy market.
