Energy Ministry Launches Measures to Stabilize the National Grid

Ukraine will experience scheduled electricity outages across all regions on June 30 as the country grapples with an extreme heatwave sweeping across Europe. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the steps being taken to balance the national power system under these challenging conditions.

As part of the response, the Energy Ministry has ordered the completion of emergency repair and restoration work, along with the commissioning of thermal generation equipment totaling at least 300 MW of capacity. Plans also call for boosting available grid capacity by approximately 300 MW through energy storage systems. During peak consumption hours, defined as 17:00 to 22:00, residents are urged to use electricity wisely.

He emphasized that 'smart electricity use during peak hours (17:00-22:00) is an important contribution each person can make to ensuring reliable power supply.'

Optimizing Schedules and Tapping Extra Capacity

Among other planned actions is the optimization of maintenance schedules for nuclear power units. This will allow for increased electricity generation during periods of highest demand. Additionally, efforts are underway to bring in more capacity through cogeneration plants, including gas-fired generation.

Serhiy Kovalenko, CEO of the energy company Yasno, stressed the need to prepare for various scenarios, adding that 'a power bank, charged devices, and a bit of attention to energy workers' updates will certainly not be superfluous.'

To manage peak loads, grid operators are also ramping up the use of energy storage systems and exploring the possibility of importing electricity from European Union partner countries. These measures are all aimed at maintaining grid stability and reliable power supply amid the extreme heat.

The power supply situation in Ukraine is becoming more difficult due to surging electricity consumption caused by the European heatwave. Actions include optimizing repair schedules and securing additional capacity, both critical for keeping the grid stable. The conditions under which the energy sector operates may affect electricity supply in the coming weeks, making rational consumption a continuing priority for all users.

As Ukraine braces for widespread power cuts due to the ongoing heatwave, it's crucial for residents to stay informed about the evolving situation. The strict blackout schedules announced by the National Power Company highlight the need for careful planning and energy conservation during this challenging period. Understanding these schedules will help ensure that households can adapt effectively to the anticipated changes in electricity availability.
